An itinerary of 24 hours full of ideas to spend the day with your pets in the village of Gatteo and in the nearby seaside resort of Gatteo Mare.
Route: Gatteo – Gatteo Mare (km 10 circa)
Modalities: recommended itinerary by car. The visit requires a full day
Itinerary in detail: from Gatteo take the Via Rigossa Destra/SP108 road to Gatteo Mare
First stop: Gatteo
The itinerary starts from the charming village of Gatteo, a few kilometers away from Gatteo Mare. The first place to reach with your dog is ‘SgambaGelso‘, a dog area of more than 3000 square meters where dogs can run freely, chase each other and play together.
Following Via Garibaldi, on the left you will find Piazza Vesi, the heart of the town. This square is home to the Municipality of Gatteo and it’s right under its arches that guided tours of the city begin. The visits can last about an hour and are free; it is also possible to carry them out with the company of your dog. Continuing along Via Garibaldi, on the right is Piazza Castello with the ancient Castello Malatestiano. To enter the courtyard, easily accessible for animals, you have to cross a stone bridge, which has replaced the original drawbridge.
In the area there are also the typical Romagna kiosks, where you can refresh yourself with the “magnificent three” of Romagna street food: piada, crescioni and piada rolls, accompanied by the most typical Romagna wines.
In Gatteo it is also a must to taste cantarelle, sweets similar to pancakes topped with sugar or honey.
Second stop: Gatteo Mare
Moving a few kilometers towards the coast you get to Gatteo Mare, the seaside village of Gatteo, where there are many hotels that accept pets.
Here we first point out the ‘SgambEuropa‘ dog area: it is a fenced area, with both shaded areas and sunny spaces, along with benches and a fountain.
After relaxing under a tree shade, it’s time to continue towards the house of Secondo Casadei, now called Villa Riccarda in honor of his daughter. The house is located in Via I Maggio and you will easily recognize it because it has engraved the verses of its most famous song ‘Romagna mia’ on the facade. Maybe your dog will even want to help you by howling a few verses! The house cannot be visited inside, but it is possible for you and your dog to observe the villa, the engravings in memory of Maestro Casadei and the surrounding garden from the street.
Moving on. you will arrive to Giardini Don Guanella and the pier: here the view of the sea is always breathtaking.
In the summer there are many events that take place in this area: car rallies, group dances for children or simply the various activities, in which pets are often allowed, organized by the Gatteo Mare Summer Village.
At end the day, a walk in the village will start off the evening, which will come alive with the shops of Viale delle Nazioni and Viale Giulio Cesare, where you can find a variety of products: from typical to organic ones; from crafts to animal care products.
